Speakers included Assemblyman Todd Gloria, Councilman Chris Ward and recognition from the offices of Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Representative Susan Davis. SAN DIEGO (April 27, 2018) – North Park Seniors, the first LGBT-affirming senior housing community in San Diego, was developed by Community HousingWorks (CHW) and hosted its grand opening celebration on Friday, April 27th. The community is the first LGBT-affirming property in San Diego and one of the first of its kind in the nation. This distinction means that North Park Seniors is welcoming to all seniors, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or other protected class status. “This new development is open to all and provides a positive and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender seniors; a first for San Diego and one of only a handful in the nation,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. More than two hundred attendees joined together to celebrate the opening of the North Park Seniors community. Officials speaking at the event included Assemblyman Todd Gloria, Councilman Chris Ward and David Graham, Deputy Chief Operating Officer with the City of San Diego. The North Park Seniors community features a 76-home affordable senior apartment building and a 118-market-rate multifamily building developed by Alliance Residential. Construction began with a groundbreaking in July 2016 at the corner of Texas Street and Howard Avenue in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood. “North Park Seniors is much more than just a building,” said Terry Vaughan. “For many of us that live here, a home like this is a dream decades in the making.” On-site supportive services are provided by The San Diego LGBT Community Center. The Center provides resources, referrals and engaging community activities to help residents live healthy, independent lives while creating a community of acceptance. “There is no better way for us to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Community HousingWorks than with the opening of North Park Seniors,” said Sue Reynolds, President and CEO of CHW. “This community is the product of years of advocacy, hard work, and collaboration between nonprofits, neighborhood leaders, elected officials, and San Diego community members. We are proud to build a brighter future for all San Diego seniors with this LGBT-affirming community." The community is open to all residents aged 55 and up who meet the income requirements. All housing decisions are made in accordance with the Fair Housing Act and state law.
“The opening of this community represents a tremendous milestone for our organization,” said Robert Gottlieb, Chair of CHW’s Board of Directors. “We would not be here without the incredible support from our community of seniors, our supporters and our generous funders.” Funders for North Park Seniors include US Bank, Union Bank, the San Diego Housing Commission, the City of San Diego, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, FHL Bank San Francisco, Community Housing Capital and Torrey Pines Bank. CHW was founded in 1988 and is a nationally-recognized nonprofit that develops, rehabilitates, preserves and operates affordable apartment communities throughout California. North Park Seniors is CHW’s first mixed-income development in the organization’s 30-year history, meaning the project brings both income-qualified and market-rate apartment homes to the community.
