Proposed Development in North Park would increase mobility SAN DIEGO (December 8, 2014)---MOVE Alliance is pleased to announce its endorsement of the proposed Community HousingWorks (CHW) Arizona Street development in North Park. The project would replace an office building within walking distance of transit with a multi-generational, sustainable, walkable residential community in the heart of San Diego. “By providing high density on key transit corridors with very walkable access to many local services, CHW’s proposal truly encompasses the MOVE Alliance vision for smart growth,” said Jim Stone, Executive Director of Circulate San Diego, the parent organization of MOVE Alliance.
Stone added: “The project will help the City and the region’s efforts to reduce vehicle miles travelled by providing residents with access to a variety of services including restaurants and entertainment without driving on the freeway, or even without getting into a car. Employment opportunities in downtown San Diego and in Mission Valley are a short transit ride away.” The proposed development is consistent with San Diego’s City of Villages concept, and the Greater North Park Community Plan, which calls for high-density housing at this location, not an office building. The site is highly-walkable, receiving a “Very Walkable” designation from Walkscore.com. Three grocery stores are within a four-block walk, and two are within a one-stop bus ride. Numerous restaurants and entertainment options also are a short walk away. In addition to the walkability benefits, the CHW Arizona Street Development creatively uses the Affordable Housing Density Bonus Program to provide a mixed income, mixed age community to include housing for low-income seniors. The senior apartments will be LGBT-affirming. MOVE Alliance also applauds CHW’s commitment to Transportation Demand Management measures, which may include a Transit Information Center; special parking for ride sharing programs and fuel efficient vehicles; bike sharing and bike storage; and electric car charging stations. MOVE Alliance recognizes that the CHW Arizona Street Development has taken the goals of the North Park Community, the environment, and quality of life of future residents under careful consideration. For these reasons, MOVE Alliance is proud to endorse the Arizona Street Development Plan.
